The distinction
Buy a conventional air freshener and you are buying two things bundled together: a physical object, and whatever fragrance the manufacturer decided to put in it. You do not choose the second. You accept it, and when it runs out, you throw away the first as well.
Re-scenting separates them. The piece — the printed card that hangs from your mirror — is permanent. The fragrance is an oil, bought separately, applied by you, in whatever quantity you decide. That is a different relationship with scent entirely, and it is much closer to how perfume works than to how air freshening works.

The method
Four steps and about two minutes, most of which is waiting.
Applying oil to a piece that is still saturated does not make it stronger, it just makes it wet. Around the five to ten day mark the fragrance softens noticeably — that is your cue.
Directly onto the surface, spread across it rather than pooled in one spot. Start at the lower end. Two drops per side is a perfectly reasonable amount for a small cabin or a sensitive nose.
The card needs time to take the oil in. Rushing this is what leaves residue on your fingers and, eventually, on whatever the piece touches next.
Both sides, then straight back to the rear-view mirror. Hanging rather than resting is what gives you even dispersal — and it keeps the oil away from your dashboard and trim.
Any Soul Scent oil works on any Soul Scent piece, so mixing and matching is entirely possible. That said, for the cleanest result, re-scent with the fragrance the piece was originally infused with — layering a new scent over the remains of a different one gives you a third thing, and not always a better one. If you do want to switch, let the old scent fade out completely first.

Longevity
Each application holds for roughly five to ten days. That figure moves with conditions more than with anything else: a car garaged overnight in Hobart and a car parked in open sun in Adelaide are not running the same experiment.
The number that actually matters, though, is not how long one application lasts. It is what happens at the end of it. With a disposable freshener, the end of the fragrance is the end of the product. With perfume oil, it is a two-minute job and you are back to full strength.
Re-scent slightly before the scent disappears entirely and you never get the gap — the flat week where the car smells of nothing and you keep meaning to buy another freshener. That continuity is the whole argument for doing it this way.
