The scent
What new car smell actually is
The real thing is not one smell. It is the combined off-gassing of adhesives, plastics, foam and treated leather in an interior that has not aired out yet, which is why it fades in a few months and never comes back on its own.
A New Car fragrance is a reconstruction of that impression. Ours leans clean and slightly synthetic rather than sweet, because sweetness is what makes most attempts at this smell wrong. There is no fruit in it and nothing floral.
The practical case for it is neutrality. It does not compete with coffee, food or a gym bag in the boot, and it does not read as a fragrance someone chose. If you want the cabin to smell looked-after rather than scented, this is the one, which also makes it the sensible pick for a shared car, a work vehicle, or a car being prepared for sale.
Longevity
How long it lasts, and what happens after
Five to ten days per application. The number that matters more is what you do at the end of it.
Heat is the variable
A car parked in open sun holds fragrance for noticeably less time than one garaged overnight. Expect the shorter end of the range over an Australian summer.
You set the strength
Three to five drops per side is the usual guide. New Car is a light fragrance, so it tolerates the upper end better than the assertive scents do.
It does not end
A disposable freshener is finished when the scent goes. This is not. The piece stays and the fragrance comes back for as long as you keep topping it up.

Applying oil to a piece that is still saturated makes it wet rather than stronger. Around the five to ten day mark the fragrance softens noticeably.

What does a new car smell air freshener smell like?
Clean and faintly synthetic, in the way a genuinely new interior is. There is nothing fruity or floral in it. Ours is deliberately neutral. It reads as an interior rather than as a fragrance somebody chose, which is why it suits shared cars and work vehicles.
How long does new car smell last in a car?
Roughly five to ten days per application, depending on heat and airflow. The real new car smell, by contrast, fades over a few months and does not return. With a re-scenting oil you simply reapply a few drops whenever it softens.
Can you bring back the new car smell in an old car?
Not literally, because the original comes from materials off-gassing when they are new, and that process does not restart. What you can do is reproduce the impression of it with a fragrance, which is what a New Car scent does. Cleaning and airing the interior first makes a noticeable difference to the result.
Is New Car a strong scent?
No, it is one of the lighter fragrances in our range. That makes it forgiving to apply. Where an assertive scent like Black Ice is best at two drops per side, New Car handles the full three to five without becoming overwhelming in a small cabin.
Is the scent natural?
